Fans of the Borderlands franchise have been waiting for Borderlands 3 since Borderlands 2 launched five years ago, but Gearbox Software has been busy with other projects, and so we’ve seen next to nothing about the game. Luckily for fans, it appears as though development on Borderlands 3 has increased significantly, as Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford reveals about 90% of the studio’s workforce is working on the game.
Pitchford made this comment at PAX West during the Inside Gearbox Software panel, but wasn’t able to elaborate on Borderlands 3 beyond that most of the studio is busy working on it. Pitchford didn’t give any indication as to when an official Borderlands 3 unveiling could take place, but evidence seems to suggest that it will be sooner rather than later.
There are a few reasons why we think an official Borderlands 3 announcement could take place in the near future. For one, there are plenty of upcoming gaming events where an announcement could make a big splash, like the Paris Games Week event, the PlayStation Experience, or The Game Awards.
Secondly, a UK retailer posted the game on its website right before E3. This led some to believe that Borderlands 3 would be announced at E3 at some point, but that never came to pass. While some may feel as though this discredits the Borderlands 3 retailer leak, it’s worth noting that the page came with an official-looking logo for the unannounced game.
And of course, there have been teases by both Gearbox Software and Borderlands publisher 2K Games about Borderlands 3. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive, teased just last month that Borderlands 3 would launch at some point in 2018, and Gearbox itself released a tech demo for the game at GDC 2017 running on Unreal Engine 4.
Considering the evidence, it’s not hard to believe that a more official Borderlands 3 announcement could come in the near future. In the meantime, fans of the franchise will just have to tune in to the big upcoming gaming events just in case Gearbox finally decides to pull the curtain back on the game.
Borderlands 3 is in development for unspecified platforms.
