Best Apple TV deals: A round-up of all the best deals and discounts on Apple TV right now.

On-demand or subscription based viewing services are increasingly popular. Even your grandma has probably heard of the BBC’’s iPlayer service. And for those fed up of watching these programmes on the small screen of your laptop, there are several snazzy streaming boxes on the market. For Apple fans, the Apple TV is the most likely option, and we’ve got a list of the best deals on the device.

Apple TV Deals – What is Apple TV?

Apple TV is an external box that transforms your ordinary TV into a smart TV. This means you can access features like iPlayer, Hulu, Youtube, and Spotify, plus several more, all on your big screen. It also functions as an entertainment hub. You can sync your existing Apple devices and stream a slideshow of your latest holiday snaps or your favourite iTunes playlist. You can even play games! What’s more, if you download the Apple TV app you can use your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch as a remote.

First launched in 2007 the Apple TV has undoubtedly come along way with noticeable improvements to its built-in Wi-Fi and processor. These days, it comes in two storage sizes, 32GB or 64GB, and you’ll pay more for the model with bigger memory. Given that our viewing habits are driven towards streaming, the smaller one is probably suitable for the majority of people, offering better value for money.

However, Apple TV does lag behind market competitors in some significant ways. Unlike other streaming boxes, this one does not output in 4K. That’s a shame if you’ve splashed out on a 4K television but can’t find any programmes in 4K to enjoy!

This could be about to change, however. It’s been rumoured Apple is preparing to offer 4K HDR iTunes movies. That would be a step in the right direction for sure, but is it enough to give it an edge in the market? And how long are we going to have to wait?

Apple also has far fewer programmes available compared to the Amazon Fire TV Stick, which boasts more than 7000 apps. Plus, the remote with Siri voice control is not the most responsive.

But if you are still itching to invest, check out the best Apple TV deals below.

Best Apple TV Deals – Fourth Generation

The most up-to-date Apple TV is the fourth-generation model which launched in 2015. It’s the only model available, as the others have been discontinued. This isn’t a problem as the technology in the older models is massively outdated.

32GB refurbished Apple TV – £119 from Apple (£139 brand new)

Buy now: Apple

64GB refurbished Apple TV – £149 from Apple (£179 brand new)

Buy now: Apple

The cheapest way to get your hands on a fourth-gen Apple TV is by opting for a refurbished one from Apple. It will still be covered by Apple’s one-year warranty, which offers you peace of mind that other second-hand purchases will not.

Teachers and students get a 10% discount. Alternatively, if you have a Quidco account, you can get 2% cashback. Which might only be £2.38, but it’s something.

Both models come with a power lead, Siri remote, lightning to USB cable, the refurbished Apple TV plus all the relevant documentation.

32GB Apple TV – £139 new with two-year warranty

Buy now: John Lewis

If you would rather buy the Apple TV brand new we recommend buying it through John Lewis. This gives you a two-year guarantee compared to Apple’s one year of cover at no extra cost.

Best Apple TV deals – Required accessories

Regardless of whether you buy the Apple TV new or refurbished, to use it you’ll need a few things. Firstly, you need 802.11 wireless, Ethernet network, or broadband Internet access. You also need an iTunes Store account to purchase or rent apps, films, music etc.

Finally, you need to buy a HDMI cable so that you can plug the Apple TV into your television. Don’t be duped into spending crazy amounts on your HDMI lead though. Apple sells one for £11 on its website but our Home Technology Editor Ced Yuen happily uses a non-branded £5 one from Amazon.

For more information on HDMI cables read John Archer’s explanation on why you shouldn’t waste loads of money on one. Once you’ve got this you are set to start streaming your favourite shows!
