Most of these games won’t come as a surprise; Halo 5, Forza and Gears of War all make an appearance, but there are some hidden gems that you might otherwise have overlooked.

Confused by all this 4K enhanced jargon? Don’t worry, just before our list of the best Xbox One X games, you can read our handy lowdown on what Microsoft’s latest buzzword actually means, and whether or not it makes all the difference when you’re playing your favourite games. Let’s begin.

Best Xbox One X games: What does Xbox One X enhanced mean?

As well as supercharging new titles, the Xbox One X can harness its extra power to “enhance” previously released games. It’s a very similar system to how Sony’s PS4 Pro works, which helps to increase the framerates at 1080p, or bump up the graphical fidelity up to 4K resolution.

Not all enhanced games will run in native 4K, so watch out. Some will run with checkerboarding like the PS4 Pro and some will offer enhanced frame rates while others will use the power of the new console to offer dynamic resolution, increased texture detail and higher polygon counts. In the end, it’s up to the developer to decide how to optimise for the One X.

Below, you’ll find our regularly curated list of the best Xbox One X games you need to play as soon as your shiny new console arrives on your doorstep. There’s something here for all ages, from racing games to shooters, we have it all covered. Let’s get to it.

Best Xbox One X games

1. Forza Motorsport 7

Turn10’s Forza Motorsport 7 is the best game on the Xbox One X. Intended as the sole game to showcase the One X’s power, with smooth as butter 60fps gameplay and high-res textures, it’s also a sheer joy to play. It was gorgeous on the regular Xbox One, and it’s even better on the One X.

2. Gears of War 4

While its PC alternative has already seen the 4K treatment, the One X version of Gears of War 4 isn’t to be snuffed at. This macho shooter benefits more than most from 4K and high-resolution textures, with pin-sharp details and body parts exploding with plenty of pop. Lovely.

3. Middle Earth: Shadow of War

The sequel to 2014’s surprise hit might not have been out long, but Middle Earth: Shadow of War is already shaping up to be one of 2017’s best games. Continuing the huge, open-world orc-slaying romp of its predecessor, the latest in the Middle-Earth series benefits from the ever-changing Nemesis system, and looks great on Xbox One X.

4. Assassin’s Creed: Origins

Following a brief hiatus, Assassin’s Creed is back, with Origins taking the franchise straight to the beginning of the story. With the One X, Assassins Creed: Origins’ version of Egypt looks fantastic, and brings the world to life with excellent clarity.

5. Cuphead

It might be as hard as nails, but Cuphead is the Xbox’s standout title. Exclusive to Microsoft’s platform, Cuphead is something out of an old 1920’s Disney cartoon, and its gameplay is deceptively devious. The addition of 60fps gameplay will make this bullet-hell shooter so much more manageable.

6. Halo 3

I know I know, Halo 3 is ancient. But hear me out: there’s so much more to this Xbox 360 title now that you can play it on your Xbox One X. Featuring a whole host of advancements, including HDR, anti-aliasing and 10-bit colour depth, Halo has never looked better.
