Fix Windows System Restore is Disabled or Turned Off


Windows users with some basic technical knowledge know the word “System Restore” very well. It is a very important feature of Windows. This feature helps users to restore windows operating system settings and files to any earlier stages. It is useful for troubleshooting so many problems including BSOD. But, What you will do if you see system restore is disabled in your PC? Probably, It will disappoint you. Then you will look for its solutions. No worries. In this article, I will try to explain some methods to get rid of this problem.

Symptoms of System Restore Disabled or not Available Problem:

This problem can be appeared with different messages in different ways. It can appear with the following messages when you try to restore your system.

System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact your domain administrator

or this one –

System Restore is disabled by your system administrator

Else, You also may find your system restore tab is grayed or missing. All of these problems have very similar reasons. In this article, You will know about them and solutions.


How to Fix System Restore is Disabled by Group Policy or System Administrator:

Most of the time, The reason is your organization has blocked this feature. That’s why you are facing this problem. Another reason is any third party service or app even by your mistake, This feature has been disabled. This can be happened from registry or local group policy. So, In order to fix this problem, You have to enable system restore from there. Let’s know the methods to do it –

Method 1: Enable System Restore from Local Group Policy

It is a very easy method. You can enable this feature from Group Policy by tweaking these things –

  • At first, Open RUN by press Windows Key + R from keyboard.
  • Then type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
  • In a new window, You will see the Local Group Policy Editor.

  • Now, Expend and naviaget to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > System Restore.
  • Now, Double click on Turn off System Restore.
  • From Settings tab, Mark Disabled.

  • Now, Click on Apply and OK.
  • Now, Double click on Turn off configuration and do the same things like before.

After doing these things, Restart your computer and see if the problem still exists.

Method 2: Enable from Registry Editor

If first method fails to fix this problem, We have to follow this method. But, First one should work. Anyway, To fix this problem, Here are the steps to follow –

  • Open RUN. Type regedit and hit Enter.
  • Now, Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows NT > SystemRestore.
  • Now, You should see DisableConfog and DisableSR. Just delete them.
  • Now reboot your PC.

Note: In Windows 10 or 8, You may not find System Restore in that registry location. It depends on many things.
