PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developers may have a point when they say that Fortnite‘s Battle Royale mode blatantly copies their game. However, there are some ways Fortnite stands apart from the many other battle royale games on the market, and that’s thanks to its building mechanics, where players can create structures on the fly for some rather unique gameplay opportunities. One Fortnite player, Aylit, used the game’s building mechanics to create a rather hilarious death trap for some unfortunate players.
Aylit captured the use of his creative death trap on video. While playing the game’s Battle Royale mode, Aylit constructs a small room, with some stairs that lead up to it. The room is filled with spike traps on the floor, so anyone that steps into it will immediately be eviscerated. To bait players into the room, Aylit drops some items on the ground, creating a sort of breadcrumb trail. Think of it as the Fortnite version of the old Hansel and Gretel story.

The building mechanics and the use of traps make something like Aylit’s death trap possible in Fortnite, and it really illustrates some major ways the game differs from PUBG. Epic Games and People Can Fly are looking to differentiate the two games even further, with PUBG remaining rooted in its relatively serious tone while Fortnite features goofy weapons like the recently added Boogie Bomb.
Perhaps Fornite and PUBG can co-exist this way, with the former taking a more humorous approach to the battle royale genre and the latter focusing on realism. However, PUBG‘s developers may still feel as though Fortnite‘s Battle Royale mode resembles their game a little too closely, and may still pursue legal action against Epic Games and People Can Fly as a result.
Regardless of any potential legal battles between PUBG and Fortnite in the future, hopefully the communities of both games can come together and enjoy hilarious clips like the one uploaded by Aylit.
Fortnite is available now in early access on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Its full launch is scheduled for some time in 2018.
