Yesterday, Gun Media released a new trailer for Friday the 13th: The Game that finally revealed its release date. However, some fans may have noticed that one important element of the game, its single player mode, was absent from the trailer. As it turns out, Friday the 13th: The Game‘s single player mode won’t be available at launch, possibly explaining why it was nowhere to be seen in the release date trailer.
Anyone interested in playing Friday the 13th: The Game‘s single player campaign will have to wait for it to be added as a free update at some point this summer. What the single player will entail is still mostly a mystery at this point, but more details on it should come shortly after the multiplayer portion of the game is made available on May 26th.
While it’s nice that Friday the 13th: The Game is getting single player at all, especially since its Kickstarter campaign failed to meet that stretch goal, some fans may be disappointed by this news. After all, Friday the 13th was reportedly delayed out of 2016 so the developers could have more time to add single player, yet the game is still launching late next month as a multiplayer-only experience.
It’s true that Friday the 13th: The Game is primarily an asymmetrical multiplayer experience, but even so, the single player would have fleshed it out and made it feel like a more complete game. As it stands, Friday the 13th: The Game sounds like it may be lacking content on launch day, thanks to the lack of a campaign and the fact that it is only launching with three multiplayer maps: Camp Crystal Lake, Higgins Haven, and Packanack Lodge.
Even though Friday the 13th: The Game may feel a little light on content at launch, it still looks like it will be a love letter to the horror movie franchise it’s based on. Not only will it give players the chance to play as the machete-wielding Jason Voorhees, but it also has a distinctly 80s slasher flick atmosphere, and is sure to be packed with plenty of references to the films.
For some fans, Friday the 13th: The Game‘s devotion to its source material may be enough to overlook its lack of a single player campaign. However, others may end up waiting to buy the game until single player is added this summer.
Friday the 13th: The Game will be available on May 26th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
