The Google Pixel 2 might not be as powerful as Google first hoped, at least according to a new report.
In the early part of 2016, most top-end flagship smartphones launched with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 820 processor on board. Then came autumn, and with it the new Google Pixel. This phone debuted with a modified version of the chip called the Snapdragon 821, and it offered a 10% performance boost over the previous chip. Cheers all round at Google HQ.
Fast forward to 2017 and the chip-in-chief is the Snapdragon 835, a powerful processor that’s already appeared in flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5. With the Google Pixel 2 likely less than a month away, it’s likely that we’ll be seeing the Snapdragon 835 rolled out yet again – which is no bad thing.
But according to prolific (and extremely reliable) mobile tipster and journalist Evan Blass, Google originally planned to load its next Pixel phone with an even more powerful chip.
Blass reports that Qualcomm initially told Google to expect a modified version of the Snapdragon 835 called the Snapdragon 836, which would likely offer a marginal performance boost.
However, he notes that the Snapdragon 836 has since been delayed until early 2018, “forcing” the new Pixel phone onto the pre-existing Snapdragon 835 chip. He also adds that the Snapdragon 836 may be rebranded next year – perhaps to the Snapdragon 845?
It’s a little bit of a shame that the Google Pixel 2 could’ve been more powerful than ever, but it’s worth remembering that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 is an extremely high-performance chip, and has been roundly applauded by reviewers. So if the Google Pixel 2 does indeed use the Snapdragon 835, then we’re expecting excellent performance all round.
Of course, neither Qualcomm nor Google have confirmed any of these details, so take all such leaks with due caution.
