Google Pixel Android Oreo Update NOW LIVE in UK

Google Pixel Android Oreo Update – The Android Oreo update just landed on my Pixel XL!

Google has now begun pushing out the Android Oreo update to unlocked Google Pixel handsets in the UK.

I know this because mine waiting for me when I woke up this morning.

Google announced Android Oreo officially a while back, and the update, which adds in a raft of new features and optimisations, is now starting to hit Nexus and Pixel phones on both sides of the Atlantic.

“We’ve been working closely with our partners over the last many months,” said Google, “and by the end of this year, hardware makers like Essential, Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, Motorola, HMD Global Home of Nokia Phones, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony are scheduled to be launching or upgrading new devices to Android 8.0 Oreo.”

Below is a breakdown of Android Oreo’s key new features:

  • Improved Notifications
  • Better Battery Management
  • Picture-In-Picture Mode
  • Adaptive Icons
  • Improved Sound Quality
  • Password Autofill
  • Multi-Display Support
  • Improved Keyboard Input

Locked Pixel phones, i.e. those bought via a carrier or a network, will always take longer, unless you’re on Verizon, as they already have it, though, those with non-Google phones will have to wait even longer.

Most OEMs will try and get the update out to their flagship handsets before the close of the year, but nothing is ever guaranteed with these kinds of things.

The biggest players (Samsung) are often the worst offenders. Nokia has pledged to get Android Oreo out to all of its handsets before the close of play in 2017. Ditto Essential and OnePlus.

However, to get the full benefit of Android Oreo, you really need to be running a Google Pixel, as these are the phones it was 100% designed around; a lot of the new design tweaks, for instance, will remain hidden beneath custom manufacturer Android skins.

I just installed the update in about five minutes over Wi-Fi; overall, there’s not much to look at, save for the new notifications drop down menu, but I will have a look around and report my findings later on today.

For now, if you’ve got a Pixel in the UK, you should be getting Android Oreo at some point either today or very soon.

Interested in the Google Pixel or Pixel XL? Well, Carphone Warehouse has now knocked £270 off the asking price of both handsets, making them an absolute steal – you can grab one, SIM-free, for just £449.99 right now.
