Huawei P20 release date and price: Huawei foregos the name P11 for its next flagship; plans to launch P20 later this month

The Huawei P10 stole many of the plaudits from MWC 2017 and many believed the Chinese company would follow suit and name its next handset, the 2018 successor to the P10, the Huawei P11.

Alas, a recent teaser trailer revealed that the next flagship will, in fact, be called the Huawei P20.

A number of details about the upcoming Huawei have also been leaked ahead of this month’s launch event and we’ve rounded up the most interesting below.

Huawei P20 release date

Speaking to Android Central last year, Bruce Lee – Huawei’s vice president of handsets product line – explained that Huawei always hopes to hit the March/April release date, but that it hadn’t been possible with the P8 or P9. This suggested the P20 may be pushed into the summer 2018.

Then, Lee said: “In the future, we will probably launch the devices at Mobile World Congress,” which led to many believing the phone would be unviled at MWC 2018. Instead, Huawei used the event to unveil the Huawei Matebook X Pro, as well as a range of tablets under the MediaPad M5 name. This family includes an 8.4in device, and two 10.8in models.

Then, the teaser trailer dropped. Set against the backdrop of Paris and the Eiffel Tower, the teaser shows the Huawei P20 will launch on 27 March. This means its release date is expected to be a week or so later – or it could push further into April, after Easter.

Huawei P20 price

The Huawei P20 price is rumoured to be around £605. The larger Huawei P20 Pro price is expected to be around £800, and the Huawei P20 Lite price has been predicted at around £300.

Huawei P20 specs

We’re expecting to see three models of the Huawei P20, if previous models are anything to go by.

The Huawei P20 is rumoured to have a 5.84in (1,080 x 2,280) IPS display, run on the 2.4GHz octa-core Kirin 970 AI chip and come with 4 or 6GB of RAM. On the rear will be a 20+12-megapixel dual-camera, with a fingerprint sensor on the front. Storage wise, we’re expecting 64-128GB internal storage with microSD card expansion slot (up to 256GB), and the phone will feature a 3,200mAh non-removable battery with a USB-C charger.

The larger Huawei P20 specs are rumoured to include the following:

  • 6.01in (1,080 x 2,280) IPS display
  • 2.4GHz octa-core Kirin 970
  • 4-6GB of RAM
  • 20+12+2-megapixel triple-camera
  • 4,000mAh non-removable battery
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • 64-128GB internal storage with microSD card expansion slot (256GB)
  • Fingerprint sensor at the front
  • Dual-SIM 4G

And the Huawei P20 Lite specs will reportedly be:

  • 5.84in (1,080 x 2,280) IPS display
  • 2.36GHz octa-core Kirin 659
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 16+12-megapixel triple-camera
  • 3,000mAh non-removable battery
  • MicroUSB
  • 64GB internal storage with microSD card expansion slot (256GB)
  • Fingerprint sensor at the back
  • Dual-SIM 4G

Huawei P20 design

The Huawei P10 has an elegant design in a range of colours so we’d expect the Huawei P20 to follow suit, coming with a premium feel and look. Rumours suggest all three of the Huawei P20 phones will have have an iPhone X-style notch in the IPS displays.

More specficially, the standard Huawei P20 is set to have a dual-lens rear camera, a matte finish, a front-mounted fingerprint sensor and a USB Type-C port with no 3.5mm headphone jack. The Huawei P20 Pro will then add a third lens on the rear, while the Huawei P20 Lite will be glossy.

The teaser trailer additionally hinted that the Huawei P20 range will run on the firm’s flagship AI chip, called Kirin. The Kirin 970 already features in other flagship Huawei and Honor devices, so we’re expecting to see it on the Huawei P20, while the Huawei P20 Lite will likely feature the Kirin 659.
