Lenovo has just announced the Mirage Solo VR headset, which is the first stand-alone VR headset based on Google’s Daydream VR ecosystem. Other OEMs, including Google itself with the Daydream View, have released Daydream-based headsets already, but so far they’ve all required pairing with a smartphone to function – not so with the Mirage Solo; it contains all the hardware and software within the headset itself, so can function entirely independently.
With the headset being based around Google’s Daydream VR project, it meets Google’s standards in terms of requisite specs for an optimised VR experience, and also means it will have access to Google’s ever-expanding Daydream catalogue of dedicated VR apps, games, and experiences.
The Mirage Solo uses a built-in tech suite dubbed WorldSense, which is designed to allow the stand-alone device to track your movements without the need for external sensors positioned in your home (as we’ve seen with the HTC Vive, for example). It also features a Daydream controller, similar to what we saw on the Daydream View and designed to allow you to interact with a VR game, app, or experience.
The internal display offers a 110-degree field of view (FOV), which is the same as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – both PC-dependent devices. The Mirage Solo is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with the Snapdragon 835 VR platform and 4GB of RAM. Lenovo promises a seven hour lifespan on a single charge for the built-in battery. It’s also been specially designed to be ergonomic, as well as comfortable with spectacles.
A release date is yet to be revealed, but we expect Lenovo will attempt to get it to market fairly quickly. On the subject of price, Lenovo only said that it will have an RRP under $400. Naturally we’ll bring you more as we hear it.
