Niantic announces a major Pokemon GO event for the UK. The event will take place the same time as the summer event in the United States, as well as the planned events for mainland Europe and Japan.
In a press release, Niantic confirmed that it is teaming up with UK heritage organization Big Heritage to put together a Pokemon GO event in the “ancient” city of Chester. Taking place the weekend of July 22 and July 23, the Chester-based fun will involve several events across the city. This will include “activities” at Chester Castle, which will be open to the public for the first time in 20 years for the celebration, as well as “fun trail activities.”
“In-game and real-world Pokemon GO activities” are also promised for those who attend the event, which takes place alongside the Chester Heritage Festival. Niantic states that several Chester historical sites will be home to PokeStops as part of the event, but it’s unclear if this in-game fun will also include an ultimate gym, which is one of the star attractions of Pokemon GO Fest in Chicago.
Pokemon GO has been banned from other historical locations for mistreatment, so many locals will be glad to see the game being used to experience history in a positive way. Players will have an incentive to learn more about the world and the history around them, where they otherwise would not have paid attention.
On top of the weekend event, Big Heritage will also roll out a Pokemon GO schools program. Schools in Cheshire and Merseyside offer “an initiative to encourage young people to explore and learn about their local area by playing Pokemon GO together.” Some have previously called for Pokemon GO rares to be banned from schools, fearing for the safety of children, but perhaps this initiative will teach children to teach them how best to play the game and avoid danger.
In a statement, Niantic CEO John Hanke said that he is “incredibly excited” about the partnership and “the idea of using mobile games as a motivation for families to play outside together and perhaps to learn something interesting while they are at it.” The Pokemon GO Raids update already encourages people to work together to play the game, so based on this, could players expect more, truly multiplayer features? It certainly seems to be where the hit mobile title is heading, so watch this space.
Pokemon GO is available on iOS and Android.
