Resident Evil Amiibo Were in the Works at One Point

The Resident Evil franchise recently made its Nintendo Switch debut with the release of Resident Evil: Revelations and Revelations 2 on November 28th. While the Nintendo Switch versions of Resident Evil: Revelations and Revelations 2 are mostly identical to other versions of the games, they do include amiibo support on the Switch. And as it turns out, Resident Evil-themed amiibo were once in the works for both titles.

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Capcom developer Ryota Niitsuma revealed that 3D models of potential Resident Evil: Revelations amiibo were made before they idea was ultimately scrapped. Surprisingly, the Resident Evil amiibo weren’t going to be of main Revelations characters like Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, but rather HUNK and Lady HUNK.

For the uninitiated, HUNK and his female counterpart are Umbrella operatives that have typically been reserved for bonus modes in various Resident Evil games over the years. The characters aren’t particularly memorable or well-known, which makes the decision to create amiibo of them over other popular Resident Evil characters somewhat strange. However, Capcom apparently made this decision based on characters that play a big role in the Raid Mode, so it’s likely that the amiibo would have had an impact on that mode in some capacity.

Even though Resident Evil amiibo never materialized, the Nintendo Switch versions of the game still include amiibo support. Fans can use any amiibo to give themselves extra ammo once per day as well as bonus points to spend in Raid Mode. Those that have gotten their hands on the Japan-exclusive Monster Hunter amiibo will earn even better rewards in the Revelations games.

However, some Resident Evil fans may have preferred to see official Resident Evil amiibo instead of having to use amiibo from other franchises in the games. With Capcom ramping up production of Nintendo Switch games, though, there’s a chance that the company may revisit the idea of creating Resident Evil amiibo, perhaps for a future Resident Evil game on the Switch.

Resident Evil: Revelations and Revelations 2 are both available now for the Nintendo Switch.
