The Galaxy S9+ has edged out Google’s Pixel 2 in DxO’s camera testing, making it top dog for imaging (for the time being)

Google’s Pixel 2 was the highest ranking camera phone tested by DxO until very recently. It has now been edged out by Samsung’s new Galaxy S9+ which received the highest ever score to date in an DxO test.

However, there are usually multiple instances within a phone-year of DxO giving out its “highest rating ever” – so take this with a pinch of salt. A new phone will come along in a few months and beat the Galaxy S9+. Most likely the Pixel 3.

This is just the way the DxO tests go; new phone comes along, beats all of last year’s and then, after a few months at the top, is usurped by a newer handset. And the Galaxy S9+ will be no exception, such are the perils of launching your phone so early in the year.

In DxO’s tests, the Galaxy S9+ nabbed a 104 for photos and a 91 for video. Below is the official conclusion of the whole test:

“The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is a smartphone without any real weaknesses in the camera department. In both still and video modes, it performs well across the board, delivering consistently good photo and video image quality in all light and shooting situations, thus earning itself our highest DxOMark Mobile score to date.

It added: “Add one of the best smartphone zooms and a capable bokeh simulation mode to the mix, and the Galaxy S9 Plus is difficult to ignore for any photo-minded smartphone user. With the Galaxy S9 Plus, Samsung is setting the pace for 2018. We’ll see if the competition can follow suit.”

  • As for negatives, the report claims the Galaxy S9+ camera struggled in the following areas:
  • Occasional exposure instabilities
  • Noticeable ringing, color fringing, and loss of sharpness in the field
  • Slight color casts occasionally noticeable
  • Occasional visible stepping during exposure convergence
  • Loss of fine details in most conditions
  • Visible residual global motion
  • Quite strong ringing and moiré

Other than that, the Galaxy S9+ sounds like a pretty bad ass camera setup. Not that this should come as surprise to anyone!
