Following Gun Media and IllFonic’s recent confirmation of there being a physical edition of Friday the 13th: The Game for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms coming out later this year, the publisher and developer decided to share a sales milestone for the title’s digital iteration. According to an announcement from the companies, the multiplayer survival-horror release has managed to sell over 1.8 million copies since its launch back in May.
The current sales figures for Friday the 13th: The Game were revealed by way of a discussion between Gun Media boss Wes Keltner and GamesIndustry.biz’s North American editor James Brightman, with the video game publisher head explaining that despite the financial success, “This entire project has been a huge learning experience for both Gun and Illfonic.” Interestingly enough, although Keltner didn’t divulge the exact budget that the survival-horror title had, it was able to be “in the black quickly.”
“The total we spent creating this game, would only cover half the animation budget for AAA games. But we made the most with what we had. As for being profitable, we were in the black quickly. However, we have reinvested that profit directly back into F13 in the form of new content (maps, characters, etc) and our ongoing server costs.”
Of course, Friday the 13th: The Game has not been without its troubles since launch due to server problems, which has resulted in many players’ dismay at both Gun Media and IllFonic’s lack of preparation for the title’s official release. Nevertheless, Keltner was quick to admit his and Gun Media’s fault for the distressing situation, with the publisher’s boss adding that having such a small development team handle the overwhelming demand of the community didn’t help matters.
“We looked at our player numbers from the beta, along with pre-orders and then added a 30% cushion. That’s how we set up our servers and database for launch. We were soooo wrong. 100,000 players hit us in the first 20 minutes, and our servers melted. Our first weekend was chaos. The entire team slept at their desks trying to keep up with demand. It’s an experience I’ll never forget. With our small budget, we couldn’t afford a large scale QA effort. We did a PC beta, and gleaned a lot of great data from that. But again, we weren’t ready for the tidal wave of players.”
When it comes to the road ahead for Friday the 13th: The Game‘s development team, Keltner explained that the team size has doubled, and its “number one priority right now is stability and squashing bugs,” which will help lay the groundwork for “new maps, characters, Easter eggs and other great updates in the near future.” Should Gun Media and IllFonic deliver satisfying post-launch support in the long run, then it stands to reason that Friday the 13th: The Game‘s sales could continue to skyrocket. Naturally, in order to further the title’s success, the companies will need to be truly diligent in regards to increased support.
