When Jon first reviewed the Moto G4, he declared it “one hell of a smartphone”, adding that it delivers more “bang per buck than any other smartphone to date.” Back then, it cost £170, but now you can get the handset £40 cheaper, making it the undisputed King of budget smartphones.
The deal comes courtesy of the Carphone Warehouse, which offers the black 16GB handset for £129.99. For that price, you get a huge amount of phone, and not just because the Moto has swollen to 5.5in in size. The phone has a octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor running at 1.5GHz, backed up by 2GB RAM. In our benchmarks, this made the Moto G4 an excellent budget performer, beating the Samsung Galaxy J5 and Honor 5X, while giving the OnePlus X a run for its money.

Of course, even with a £40 reduction, you might not have the money for the Moto G4 upfront in one go, so what are you current contract options? A quick dig around shows some solid deals at Smart Phone Company, where you can currently get the Moto G4 for £11 per month with no upfront cost with Talk Mobile. The bundle includes 2,000 UK minutes, 5,000 UK texts and 4GB data, although you will need to claim cashback, otherwise you’ll be paying £15 per month. Discount manual cashback deals, and you’re looking at round £14 per month. Still a good deal, just not quite as good a deal.
£11 over 24 months comes out at £264, meaning you’ll pay £134 more over the 24 months if you don’t buy the handset outright. Still, that means the data, minutes and texts come in at just £5.58 per month, which is pretty hard to beat. Either way, you’re getting a bargain handset that’s an absolute pleasure to use.
