If you go to Alphr’s best smartphone guide right now, you’ll see that it’s not the Samsung Galaxy S8 that sits at the top of the list. Nor is it a HTC, Sony, LG or Apple handset. It’s the OnePlus 3T. For people in the know, OnePlus is the go-to handset for people who want top performance, but don’t want to pay the Earth for it. It’s £399 compared to the second-place S8’s £689.
Now the follow-up handset is just around the corner, the Chinese developer has announced. All will be revealed in a press conference to be hosted on Tuesday 20 June at 16:00 GMT, as you’ll see on the OnePlus 5’s holding page.
Wait, OnePlus 5? Can I buy a OnePlus 4 while I wait?
No, you didn’t miss it. There really was no OnePlus 4. OnePlus is a Chinese company, and the number four is considered unlucky in some Asian cultures. Look it up: it’s called tetraphobia.
Okay, so what can I expect from the OnePlus 5 then?
We’ve been following the progress of the OnePlus 5 for some time, and the longstanding rumours suggest the latest handset will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor backed by either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. That gives it simila oomph to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11. More recent rumours suggest we’ll be treated to a dual-lens camera, and a boost to a Quad HD display – which could be just the ticket for virtual-reality headsets such as the Google Daydream.
Yes, yes, but what will the OnePlus 5 look like?
A bit like the picture at the top of the page, if leaks from Android Police are to be believed.
Here’s another picture:
No, you’re not imagining it. That does look an awful lot like the iPhone 7. Although it may end up being a bit more colourful:
And what will it cost?
That’s something we don’t know right now. OnePlus handsets have been slowly creeping up in price, and with the huge leaps in flagship prices from LG, HTC and Samsung this year, it wouldn’t be surprising if OnePlus were to follow suit. The OnePlus 3T launched for £399 (up from £309 for the OnePlus 3) – I would imagine it will be somewhere between £450 and £500, but we’ll know for sure in two weeks’ time.
