Ultra Street Fighter 2 Announced For Switch

Capcom announces a brand new version of Street Fighter 2 for the Nintendo Switch, which is set to introduce two new characters and one new mode.

Last night, an international audience gathered to watch the official unveiling of the Switch — and, as it turned out, Nintendo wasn’t the only studio with something new to show. Capcom revealed Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers, a brand new version of the classic fighting game.

At least one iteration of Street Fighter 2 has been released just about every console since the original arcade version debuted in 1991. However, its Ultra edition comes complete with previously unseen content in the form of two new characters and one new gameplay mode.

The new characters offer a slightly different take on Ryu and Ken, the two most recognizable members of the game’s roster. Evil Ryu represents the path the martial artist would have taken if he allowed himself to succumb to the Satsui no Hado, the dark energy that acts as the source of Akuma’s power.

Meanwhile, Violent Ken is an alternate version of Ryu’s rival who was captured by the villainous M. Bison and brainwashed. As a result, he’s a much more aggressive and ruthless fighter than the standard characterization that fans are familiar with.

The game also featured a mode similar to the fan favorite Dramatic Battle option present in the Street Fighter Alpha games. In it, two fighters can team up to take on a single opponent, according to a report from Gamespot.

Ultra Street Fighter 2 will feature the redrawn HD graphics that were used in 2008’s Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. However, players will also have the option to use the original pixel art graphics from that game’s initial release.

Earlier this week, leaked details of third-party Switch accessories revealed that Hori was prepping a fight stick for the console. As a result, many expected some kind of fighting game would be shown at Nintendo’s event.

Ultra Street Fighter 2 seems like a great pick for the console, given its focus on local multiplayer. However, it remains to be seen whether the analog stick on the Joy-Con will be accurate enough to facilitate Hadoukens and Sonic Booms in the midst of an intense battle.

Capcom is yet to announce how much Ultra Street Fighter 2 will cost, although it seems reasonable to assume that it won’t be a full-priced title. As of the time of writing, there’s no indication whether the game will get a physical release or not.

Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers is expected to launch in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch.
