Apple is forging ahead with plans to bring iOS applications to its lineup of Mac computers

Later on this year, Apple will announce iOS 12 and macOS 10.14. This will happen at Apple’s WWDC 2018 event in June, and one of the biggest features coming will be the ability to natively run iOS applications on Mac computers.

Yep: iOS apps from the App Store WILL run on Mac PCs.

This process will be achieved by Apple’s internal project known as Marzipan, which will simplify developer tools with a unified tool base, in order to make the porting of apps from iOS and macOS even easier.

Apple has a wealth of excellent apps inside its App Store. Opening them up to Mac would be HUGE and it would also solve a lot of issues involved in the creation and concept of a unified platform – one that works on both phone and PC/laptop.

Apple’s always said it has no plans to merge iOS with macOS. Perhaps this plan is why it has always taken that stance; it had a plan all along to bring iOS apps to macOS powered machines.

This would solve a lot of potential problems for Apple, especially since merging two platforms would be a massive headache. Also, Apple’s Mac App Store positively sucks, so leveraging the App Store makes a lot of sense.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Mac App Store is just folded inside a new, cross-platform App Store for ALL Apple products – iOS and macOS.

This way Apple (and its users) get the best of both worlds: apps work on both platforms and all the hard work (reformatting apps) is handled by developers.

Beyond this, it makes iPhone and Mac more cohesive, as apps will work better together which makes for better productivity and further adoption of its iPhones, Macs and iPads.

Expect more news on this in the run-up to WWDC 2018.
