Sony’s Media Showcase this morning at the Paris Games Weeks event has proven to be a wild success, featuring new trailers and announcements regarding all of the publisher’s most anticipated upcoming releases. Prominent among those games is the remake of Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 4, developed by Bluepoint. The latest update on the legendary game’s remake is a new trailer showing off the original game’s now updated introductory cinematic.
The in-engine cinematic trailer takes place prior to the events of Shadow of the Colossus itself. It features protagonist Wander making the journey to the land of the Colossi and the Temple at its heart. Wander, the mysterious woman Mono, and their horse Agro make their way past mountains, through forests, and eventually across the giant bridge that marks the region’s entrance. Few changes have been made compared to the original Shadow of the Colossus; the majority of the opening cinematic is a mirror of the original but with Bluepoint’s updated visuals.
Speaking of visuals, the work Bluepoint has done should impress all viewers, particularly on 4K screens. But even 1080p visuals are strikingly impressive due to the improved modeling, animations, lighting, and additional changes made as part of the remake.
In addition to the in-engine cinematic trailer, Sony showed a gameplay trailer for the Shadow of the Colossus remake during the media showcase. The relatively short gameplay trailer features part of the fight with the 13th colossi, Phalanx. The footage has unfortunately not been made fully available online, beyond a tweet with a gif. It’s unclear whether Sony is saving an extended gameplay trailer for debut later this week or at PSX in early December.

Finally, Sony confirmed that the Shadow of the Colossus remake will be available starting February 6th, much earlier than many may have been expecting. Sony had previously stated that all of the games shown at E3 would be released in 2017 or early 2018, but February seems like a very fast turnaround for a game only recently announced. To be fair, Bluepoint did work on the original Shadow of the Colossus‘ HD remaster prior to the new remake, and so that almost certainly helped the studio speed up development.
More news, including more gameplay, is likely to be shared for Shadow of the Colossus in the near future. Expect it by PSX, between December 9th and 10th, at the very latest. And with the game’s release just several months away it begs the question: Could an Ico remake be Bluepoint’s next project?
Shadow of the Colossus releases on February 6th, exclusively for the PS4.
